Project description
π What Is willow-esp-srmodels?
willow-esp-srmodels is a model-packaging and release repository for Willow voice devices. It is not an application library, the main Willow firmware, or a project that trains AI models.
Its automated workflow takes completed WakeNet9 models from Espressif's ESP-SR project and publishes one downloadable package for each wake word. Every package contains the model file srmodels.bin, its license, and a SOURCE.txt record pointing back to the original model.
Official GitHub source card. The repository turns completed ESP-SR models into downloadable Willow model packages.
Direct answer: This repository does not create the AI or run the voice assistant. It turns trained wake-word models into downloadable packages that Willow devices can use.
What Does It Add to Willow?
Willow is an open-source voice-assistant stack for ESP32-S3-BOX devices and self-hosted services. A Willow terminal needs compatible model data before it can recognize a wake phrase. willow-esp-srmodels gives this model data its own download and release path, separate from the main device firmware.
Official Willow hardware image. ESP32-S3-BOX-3 runs the local wake-word model, while the model package is supplied as a separate artifact.
This makes each wake-word package easier to identify, download, and manage. A new package release means the distribution was refreshed; it does not necessarily mean the model was retrained.
Where Does the AI Run?
Hey, Willow is a real trained WakeNet9 model from Espressif. It runs on the ESP32-S3 and listens locally for the wake phrase. HeyWillow packages the completed model but does not train it.
After it hears the wake phrase, the terminal can send the user's spoken request over the LAN to self-hosted Willow services. Those services convert speech to text, create a spoken reply, and pass commands to applications such as Home Assistant. Wake-word detection stays on the device, while the more demanding voice processing runs on a local server.
Generated infographic: WakeNet runs locally on ESP32-S3. Built-in Wi-Fi or an optional external W5500/RJ45 interface can carry audio and command traffic to configured self-hosted services on the LAN.
Where Does W5500 Fit?
W5500 is not part of willow-esp-srmodels. Its support is implemented in the main Willow firmware, where it lets Willow use an optional external W5500 board for wired Ethernet.
ESP32-S3-BOX-3 includes Wi-Fi but does not include an RJ45 port. A wired Willow configuration therefore adds a separate W5500 Ethernet board. The ESP32-S3 talks to that board over SPI, and the RJ45 jack on the external board connects the terminal to the LAN.
External W5500 hardware with its own RJ45 jack, shown in WIZnet's MIKROE success story. It is not a port built into ESP32-S3-BOX-3.
Willow pull request #460 states that the Ethernet update was tested on ESP32-S3-BOX-3 with a separate MIKROE ETH WIZ Click based on W5500. In that optional configuration, W5500 carries network traffic between the voice terminal and local services. It does not run WakeNet, speech recognition, or speech synthesis.
WIZnet's role: W5500 is the wired network path. ESP32-S3 detects the wake word, and the self-hosted server handles speech recognition and responses.
Why This Small Repository Matters
The repository gives Willow one clear place to get and identify wake-word models. Espressif supplies the trained model, HeyWillow packages it, ESP32-S3 runs it, and Wi-Fi or optional W5500 connects the device to local services.

β FAQ
Is willow-esp-srmodels a library or firmware? No. It is a model-packaging repository that publishes wake-word model artifacts for Willow devices.
What is srmodels.bin? It is the packaged wake-word model file that ESP-SR reads on the device.
Is Hey, Willow a real trained AI model? Yes. It is an Espressif WakeNet9 neural-network model. HeyWillow packages the completed model but does not train it.
Does wake-word detection require a cloud AI API? No. WakeNet detects the wake phrase locally on ESP32-S3. Later speech processing can use self-hosted Willow services on the LAN.
Is W5500 or RJ45 built into ESP32-S3-BOX-3? No. A separate W5500 board supplies the RJ45 connection, and W5500 transports network traffic rather than running the AI.
