Which W5500 Module Should You Plug into a grblHAL CNC Controller? Notes from "WIZ What?"

Source: https://www.grbl.org/single-post/wiz-what — "WIZ What? Understanding WizNet W5500 for Your CNC Projects", Phil Barrett, Brookwood Design / The GRBL Project, published 9 July 2026, updated 1 August 2026.

Phil Barrett designs the PicoCNC (RP2040) and RP23CNC (RP235x) grblHAL controllers, both of which take a plug-in WIZnet module for Ethernet. His short article answers the question his customers keep asking: which of the many "W5500 modules" on Amazon and AliExpress actually fits, and does the "not 5 V compatible" warning on some clones matter. The answer is a three-point physical checklist, a clear warning about the W5200-based WIZ820io, and a recommendation to buy a genuine WIZnet module when certainty matters. This post summarises the article and adds what WIZnet's own WIZ850io documentation says about the module he standardised on.

[COMPONENTS]

- WIZnet WIZ850io — Genuine W5500 module selected for PicoCNC and RP23CNC. Two rows of 6 pins; "proven reliable" in the author's boards. WIZnet docs: W5500 + integrated transformer and RJ45 MAG-JACK, 2.54 mm J1 (SPI) / J2 (power, control) headers, 3.3 V supply (2.97–3.63 V)
- WIZnet WIZ550io — Earlier genuine W5500 module. Larger, with an unusual 6-pin + 8-pin layout; not the target footprint
- WIZnet WIZ820io — W5200-based module. Not compatible with the W5500 designs; some clone listings confusingly say "Wiz820io compatible"
- Clone modules (USR-ES1, "W5500 lite", "W5500io", "Wiz850-lite", etc.) — Lower-cost alternatives. All units the author bought share one PCB design and all worked; often sold in lots of two or more
- RP23CNC (RP235x) / PicoCNC (RP2040) — Host boards running grblHAL. 3.3 V logic only; Ethernet is an add-on module
- Two 6×1 2.54 mm sockets — Mounting the module. Included in the GRBL Project Ethernet kit

[PROJECT DESCRIPTION]

▶ Overview

grblHAL supports networking (WebUI, telnet, WebSocket streaming) on the RP2040/RP2350 drivers through a W5500, and Brookwood Design's boards expose that as a socketed module rather than soldering the chip down. That makes the controller cheaper for users who only want USB, but it also hands the user a sourcing decision. Barrett's article is the guide he wrote to settle it.

▶ Three genuine WIZnet modules, one of which does not fit

The article walks through WIZnet's own module line. The WIZ550io was the original W5500 evaluation module, physically large with an asymmetric 6-pin/8-pin header arrangement. The WIZ850io is the compact successor with two rows of six pins; it is what the PicoCNC and RP23CNC were designed around, and Barrett reports it has been reliable. The WIZ820io looks similar but carries the older W5200 chip and is not usable in his W5500 designs. WIZnet's WIZ850io documentation describes the module as WIZ820io-compatible in terms of form factor, which explains why marketplace listings reuse the name; the firmware, however, targets the W5500.

▶ Clones: same board, different label

Barrett bought several clones and found that they all appear to share one PCB layout and all of them worked on his boards. The names vary ("Wiz820 compatible", USR-ES1, Wiz850io, W5500io, Wiz850-lite), and he notes there may be others. Genuine modules cost around US$20 from DigiKey, Mouser and other distributors; clones on Amazon are cheaper but usually come in multi-packs, with USR-ES1 and "W5500 lite" listings typically the lowest priced.

▶ The 5 V question

Some clone listings state that the module is not 5 V compatible, unlike the original. Barrett examined the boards closely and could find no real difference, suggesting clones may simply use lower-rated passive components. His practical conclusion is that for his controllers the question is moot: the WIZ850io is a 3.3 V module, the W5500's inputs tolerate 5 V, and the RP23CNC and PicoCNC drive it at 3.3 V only. WIZnet's WIZ850io electrical table lists a maximum high-level input of 5.5 V for all pins, consistent with that reading.

▶ The compatibility checklist

A module is very likely to work if it has:

1. a W5500 chip,
2. two rows of 6×1 pin headers, and
3. a footprint of roughly 23 mm × 25 mm.

Two 6×1 2.54 mm sockets are needed on the host board. For certainty Barrett recommends a genuine WIZnet part. The GRBL Project also sells a US$14 Ethernet kit (module plus two sockets), and states that each batch of sourced clones is validated on the RP23CNC before sale; kits are normally bundled with the board but can be requested separately.

▶ W5500 architecture: why the module can be a plug-in

A grblHAL controller is a hard real-time motion engine: step pulses are generated on the RP2040/RP2350 while the network side streams G-code, serves a WebUI and answers status polls. The W5500 keeps the whole Ethernet front end off the MCU. The chip integrates the 10/100 MAC and PHY, 32 KB of packet buffer and, if the driver chooses to use them, eight hardwired TCP/IP sockets, all behind a single SPI interface, and the WIZ850io adds the magnetics and RJ45. Whether the grblHAL driver uses the hardwired sockets or runs the chip in MACRAW mode under lwIP, the MCU only exchanges buffers over SPI; it never has to own a PHY, a transformer layout or an interrupt-heavy MAC. That is why the module can be an optional plug-in: removing it leaves the motion firmware untouched. The same property is what makes the clone question low-risk in practice. As long as the W5500 silicon and the pinout are the same, the host sees the same register interface, which matches Barrett's observation that every clone he tried worked.

[FAQ]

Q. Will a "USR-ES1" or "W5500 lite" module work on an RP23CNC or PicoCNC?
According to the article, yes: every clone the author tested worked, and the GRBL Project validates each batch it ships in its kit. For guaranteed compatibility he recommends a genuine WIZ850io.

Q. Why is the WIZ820io excluded when it has the same header?
It uses the W5200, not the W5500. The boards' firmware targets the W5500, so the W5200 module is not interchangeable even though listings call it "compatible".

Q. Does "not 5 V compatible" on a clone listing matter?
Not for these controllers. They run the module at 3.3 V, and the W5500 inputs are 5 V tolerant (WIZnet's WIZ850io table gives VIH max 5.5 V). Barrett found no physical difference in the clones he inspected.

Q. What does the Ethernet kit contain and cost?
A W5500 module plus two 6×1 2.54 mm sockets for US$14, normally sold with the board; buyers who did not receive one can contact the GRBL Project.

Q. What is WIZ850io's electrical spec?
From WIZnet's documentation: 3.3 V operation (2.97–3.63 V), SPI mode 0/3 with MOSI/SCLK/SCS on J1 and MISO on J2, INTn interrupt output, integrated transformer and RJ45. Module dimensions are given as 25 × 23 mm in the mechanical section.

"WIZ What?" 정리

출처: https://www.grbl.org/single-post/wiz-what — "WIZ What? Understanding WizNet W5500 for Your CNC Projects", Phil Barrett, Brookwood Design / The GRBL Project, 2026년 7월 9일 게시, 8월 1일 갱신.

[COMPONENTS]

[PROJECT DESCRIPTION]

[FAQ]

W5500 모듈 + 6×1 2.54 mm 소켓 2개, US$14.
