I can not find link status in the datasheet, thus it seems, like in W5100, you can not know the status of link unless you connect link LED to the controller and read it status separately.
Edit: link LED will only show status of the sense of incoming link (RX), not sure it will show TX connectivity. Therefore if you want to reliably know status of “cable plugged in” you need physical switch in the cable connector!
