PROJECT DESCRIPTION

  • ESP32-WROOM
  • 4 MB Flash
  • 8 MB PSRAM
  • WIZnet W5500 Ethernet Controller
  • 100 Mbps Ethernet
  • IEEE 802.3bt PoE++
60 W Power
  • TAS5756 Digital Audio Amplifier
  • Stereo Speaker Output

Best Speaker Position ≠ Best Wi-Fi Position

  • Playback interruption
  • Audio dropout
  • Streaming delay
  • Connection retry

W5500 Ethernet Configuration

model=w5500, cs=15, speed=20000000, intr=18, rst=19

SignalGPIO
MOSIGPIO13
CLKGPIO14
MISOGPIO12

Network Audio와 W5500

  • Ethernet Cable
Power Adapter
  • AC Outlet
Power Wiring

One Cable → Network + Power

Ethernet과 PoE++의 결합

Ethernet Cable
→ W5500
→ ESP32
→ Audio Application

Ethernet Cable
→ PoE++
→ Audio Amplifier

TAS5756 Audio Amplifier

Hardware

Hardware Revision

Ethernet

  • Ethernet Cable

Wired Ethernet

  • Speaker
  • Ethernet Cable
  • PoE Infrastructure

Whole-Home Audio

Commercial Audio

Ceiling Speaker

Smart Building

DIY Network Audio

SqueezeAMP PoE

Network

  • W5500 SPI Configuration 공개
  • CS / Interrupt / Reset
  • 100 Mbps Wired Ethernet
  • IEEE 802.3bt PoE++
60 W Power
  • TAS5756 Audio Amplifier
  • PCB / Schematic 자료
  • Hardware Revision

SqueezeAMP PoE: ESP32 Network Audio Amplifier with W5500 Ethernet and PoE++

English

When installing network speakers, the best location for sound is not always the best location for Wi-Fi.

Speakers are usually positioned according to room layout and acoustics, but those locations may be near ceilings, inside walls, or behind furniture where wireless reception is less reliable.

SqueezeAMP PoE is an ESP32-based network audio amplifier designed around this practical problem.

Instead of relying only on Wi-Fi, the project adds 100 Mbps wired Ethernet based on the WIZnet W5500 and combines it with PoE++.

The result is a network audio endpoint that can receive reliable network connectivity and power through Ethernet infrastructure.

Project Overview

SqueezeAMP PoE is a network audio system based on squeezelite-esp32.

Its main components include:

ESP32-WROOM

4 MB Flash

8 MB PSRAM

WIZnet W5500 Ethernet controller

100 Mbps Ethernet

IEEE 802.3bt PoE++

up to 60 W power delivery

TAS5756 digital audio amplifier

stereo speaker output

Ethernet is not simply an additional feature in this project. It is a core network interface intended to improve the reliability of audio streaming.

Why Ethernet?

One of the strongest aspects of the project is that the reason for adding Ethernet is very easy to understand.

Speaker placement is determined primarily by acoustics and room layout, not by wireless signal strength.

The problem can be summarized in one sentence:

Best Speaker Position ≠ Best Wi-Fi Position

Even when a speaker is located in the ideal acoustic position, a weak Wi-Fi signal can make network audio streaming unreliable.

Audio streaming is different from a sensor application that exchanges small packets occasionally.

It requires a continuous flow of network data during playback, so poor connectivity can immediately affect the user experience through:

playback interruption

audio dropouts

streaming delays

connection retries

SqueezeAMP PoE adds W5500-based wired Ethernet as an alternative network path for these environments.

The W5500 is therefore not included simply to add another Ethernet port. It addresses a real network reliability issue that directly affects audio playback.

System Architecture

The data flow from the network to the speakers can be represented as:

Ethernet Network
↓
WIZnet W5500
↓ SPI
ESP32
↓ Digital Audio
TAS5756
↓
Speakers

The responsibilities of each component are also clearly separated.

W5500

wired Ethernet interface

hardwired TCP/IP networking

network socket processing

ESP32

squeezelite-esp32

network audio application

audio processing

system control

amplifier control

TAS5756

The W5500 provides the network layer, while the ESP32 handles the application and audio processing.

W5500 Ethernet Configuration

The project provides explicit firmware configuration for the W5500.

The documented configuration includes:

model=w5500, cs=15, speed=20000000, intr=18, rst=19

The SPI bus uses:

SignalGPIO
MOSIGPIO13
CLKGPIO14
MISOGPIO12

This confirms that the W5500 is not simply a component shown in the schematic. It is explicitly configured as the Ethernet controller in the firmware.

The project also documents details such as chip select, interrupt, reset, and SPI speed, making the actual implementation easy to understand.

W5500 in a Network Audio Application

Network audio has different networking requirements from many common sensor applications.

A temperature sensor, for example, may send only a small amount of data every few seconds or minutes.

Audio streaming requires continuous network data throughout playback.

As a result, any network instability can become immediately visible to the user.

By using the W5500, the ESP32 gains a dedicated wired Ethernet interface while TCP/IP networking can be handled by the W5500's hardwired TCP/IP engine.

This allows the ESP32 to continue focusing on the audio application and system-level processing.

The project therefore demonstrates that the W5500 can be useful not only in industrial gateways or sensor networks, but also in multimedia and consumer-facing applications.

Why PoE++?

SqueezeAMP PoE combines wired Ethernet with PoE++.

The design supports IEEE 802.3bt PoE++ and considers power delivery of up to 60 W.

An audio amplifier requires significantly more power than a typical IoT sensor.

Without PoE, an installation may require:

an Ethernet cable

a separate power adapter

a nearby AC outlet

additional power wiring

PoE++ allows both network connectivity and power to be delivered through the Ethernet cable.

In other words:

One Cable → Network + Power

This can be particularly useful for speakers installed on ceilings or walls, where separate power wiring can complicate installation.

Combining Ethernet and PoE++

A single Ethernet cable performs two functions in SqueezeAMP PoE.

The first is network data:

Ethernet Cable
→ W5500
→ ESP32
→ Audio Application

The second is power:

Ethernet Cable
→ PoE++
→ Audio Amplifier

This allows network connectivity and power delivery to share the same infrastructure.

That is particularly useful in fixed network audio installations.

TAS5756 Audio Amplifier

SqueezeAMP PoE uses a TAS5756 digital audio amplifier.

The documented design provides approximately 30 W stereo output into 8 Ω speakers.

This means the project is more than a network-to-audio converter.

It is a complete audio endpoint capable of driving speakers directly.

The complete signal chain is:

Hardware Implementation

The project provides PCB and schematic design resources.

This makes it possible to inspect not only the system architecture, but also how the W5500 is implemented on an actual custom board.

The project also documents hardware revisions.

One revision includes a correction related to the W5500 clock implementation, which provides useful information for developers integrating the Ethernet controller into their own hardware.

Projects that document both the final design and issues encountered during development can provide greater practical engineering value.

Wi-Fi and Ethernet

SqueezeAMP PoE does not suggest that Ethernet is always better than Wi-Fi.

Each networking approach has advantages depending on the installation.

Wi-Fi can be useful when:

Ethernet cabling is difficult

device mobility is important

rapid installation is required

additional cabling should be minimized

Wired Ethernet can be useful when:

speaker locations are fixed

reliable audio streaming is important

Ethernet cabling is already available

PoE infrastructure can be used

SqueezeAMP PoE is therefore best understood as a project that adds wired Ethernet as another practical option for network audio, rather than simply replacing Wi-Fi.

Potential Applications

Whole-Home Audio

Speakers in different rooms can be implemented as Ethernet-based network audio endpoints.

Commercial Audio

The architecture can be used as a reference for distributed audio systems in restaurants, stores, offices, or other commercial environments.

Ceiling Speakers

Network connectivity and power can be delivered to ceiling-mounted speakers through a single cable.

Smart Buildings

Multiple audio endpoints can be integrated into a building Ethernet network.

DIY Network Audio

The open hardware and firmware resources can serve as a reference for custom network audio products.

How This Project Differs from Typical W5500 Applications

The W5500 is frequently seen in industrial automation, sensor systems, gateways, and remote I/O applications.

SqueezeAMP PoE shows a different application area.

Here, the W5500 is used in a multimedia application directly experienced by the end user.

The value of reliable Ethernet is also easy to understand.

When the network is unstable, the music stops.

That makes the value of wired networking understandable without requiring a complex technical explanation.

The core idea of the project can be summarized in one sentence:

“The best speaker location is not always the best Wi-Fi location.”

SqueezeAMP PoE addresses that practical problem with W5500 wired Ethernet and PoE++.

Why This Project Is Interesting

SqueezeAMP PoE combines a clear application story with concrete technical evidence.

The project documents:

W5500 explicitly configured in firmware

W5500 SPI configuration

CS, interrupt, and reset settings

a clear reason for adding wired Ethernet

100 Mbps Ethernet

IEEE 802.3bt PoE++

up to 60 W power

TAS5756 audio amplifier

PCB and schematic resources

hardware revision history

This makes it possible to explain not only that the W5500 is used, but also why it was selected, where it sits in the system, and what value it provides to the final user experience.

Conclusion

SqueezeAMP PoE combines the ESP32, WIZnet W5500, PoE++, and TAS5756 in a network audio amplifier.

The ESP32 handles the audio application, while the W5500 provides wired Ethernet and hardwired TCP/IP networking.

PoE++ allows network connectivity and power to be delivered through the same Ethernet cable.

The key value of the project is not simply the addition of Ethernet. It addresses a clear practical problem: Wi-Fi may not be reliable at the location where a speaker needs to be installed.

SqueezeAMP PoE is therefore an interesting example showing how the W5500 can extend beyond industrial networking into network audio and other user-facing applications.
