PROJECT DESCRIPTION

8개의 Digital Input, 8개의 Digital Output, CAN, RS485/Modbus, 그리고 WIZnet W5500 기반 100 Mbps Ethernet을 하나의 시스템에 결합합니다.

  • ESP32-S3 Main Controller
  • WIZnet W5500 Ethernet Controller
  • 100 Mbps Wired Ethernet
  • 8 Digital Inputs
  • 8 Digital Outputs
  • CAN Bus
  • RS485 / Modbus
I/O Expander
  • 5–24 V DC Input
  • TS-35 DIN-Rail Mounting

Ethernet Network
↓
WIZnet W5500
↓ SPI
ESP32-S3
↓
CAN / RS485 / Digital I/O

Field Layer
Digital I/O / CAN / RS485

↓

Control Layer
ESP32-S3

↓

Network Layer
W5500 Ethernet

W5500 Ethernet Interface

W5500 SignalESP32-S3 GPIO
CLKGPIO13
MOSIGPIO11
MISOGPIO12
CSGPIO14
INTGPIO10
RESETGPIO9

Digital Input과 Output

I/O는 I2C 기반 XL9535 I/O Expander를 통해 관리되며 문서에 공개된 I2C Address는 다음과 같습니다.

0x20

  • 0.5 A
  • 24 V

CAN Bus

CAN Interface

CAN GPIO

ESPCAN 8PRO의 CAN Interface에는 내부 Termination이 포함되어 있지 않으므로, 장치가 CAN Bus의 끝단에 위치하는 경우 외부 120 Ω Termination Resistor가 필요합니다.

Modbus

  • TX: GPIO2
  • RX: GPIO1
  • DE/RE: GPIO42

RS485 / Modbus Device
→ ESP32-S3
→ W5500 Ethernet
→ IP Network

Hybrid Network

  • Controller
  • Wireless Network
Gateway

Power

Ethernet, CAN, RS485, Digital I/O뿐 아니라 Power와 설치 방식까지 고려된 점에서 일반 Maker Board보다 산업용 Controller에 가까운 형태입니다.

Remote I/O

Industrial Gateway

Equipment Monitoring

Building Automation

Distributed Control

Architecture
  • W5500 SPI Pin Mapping
  • Interrupt / Reset Pin
  • CAN GPIO Mapping
  • RS485 GPIO Mapping
  • Digital I/O 구성
  • I2C Expander Address
  • CAN / RS485 Termination 조건
  • Power Requirement
  • DIN-Rail Installation

ESP32-S3, WIZnet W5500, CAN, RS485, Digital I/O를 하나의 산업용 DIN-Rail Controller에 통합한 프로젝트입니다.

W5500이 단순한 IoT Ethernet Interface를 넘어 Industrial Gateway, Remote I/O, Building Automation과 같은 산업용 Application에서 Network Layer로 활용될 수 있음을 보여주는 좋은 Reference입니다.

ESPCAN 8PRO: Industrial DIN-Rail Controller with ESP32-S3, W5500 Ethernet, CAN, and RS485

Industrial controllers often need to handle several communication interfaces at the same time rather than relying on a single network.

A controller may communicate with a supervisory system over Ethernet, exchange data with field equipment through CAN or RS485, and directly interact with sensors, switches, relays, or actuators through digital I/O.

ESPCAN 8PRO is an ESP32-S3-based DIN-rail controller designed around this type of industrial environment. It combines eight digital inputs, eight digital outputs, CAN, RS485/Modbus, and 100 Mbps Ethernet based on the WIZnet W5500 in a single platform.

The interesting part of this project is not simply that Ethernet was added. It demonstrates a hybrid architecture that connects field-level industrial interfaces to a higher-level IP network.

Project Overview

The ESP32-S3 is the main processor of ESPCAN 8PRO.

It handles application logic, local I/O, CAN communication, and RS485 communication, while the W5500 is connected through SPI and provides a dedicated wired Ethernet interface.

The main hardware features include:

ESP32-S3 main controller

WIZnet W5500 Ethernet controller

100 Mbps wired Ethernet

8 digital inputs

8 digital outputs

CAN bus

RS485 / Modbus

I2C-based I/O expander

5–24 V DC input

TS-35 DIN-rail mounting

The result is a platform that looks closer to a practical industrial controller than a typical Ethernet development board.

System Architecture

The overall architecture can be represented as:

Ethernet Network
↓
WIZnet W5500
↓ SPI
ESP32-S3
↓
CAN / RS485 / Digital I/O

The W5500 provides connectivity to the higher-level IP network, while the ESP32-S3 handles communication with field equipment and executes the main control logic.

Ethernet does not replace CAN or RS485.

Instead, each interface serves a different communication layer and they work together within one controller.

From an industrial system perspective, the architecture can be viewed as:

Field Layer
Digital I/O / CAN / RS485

↓

Control Layer
ESP32-S3

↓

Network Layer
W5500 Ethernet

This makes the role of the W5500 in the system particularly clear.

W5500 Ethernet Interface

The W5500 is connected to the ESP32-S3 through SPI.

The project documents the following pin assignments:

W5500 SignalESP32-S3 GPIO
CLKGPIO13
MOSIGPIO11
MISOGPIO12
CSGPIO14
INTGPIO10
RESETGPIO9

This provides stronger technical evidence than simply listing the W5500 as a component. The SPI signals, interrupt, and reset connections are explicitly documented.

The W5500 is a hardwired TCP/IP Ethernet controller that handles TCP/IP networking in hardware.

This allows the ESP32-S3 to focus on application-level tasks such as digital I/O control, CAN communication, and RS485/Modbus processing.

In this project, the W5500 therefore serves as a dedicated Ethernet network layer for the industrial controller, rather than simply providing an RJ45 connection.

Digital Input and Output

ESPCAN 8PRO provides eight digital inputs and eight digital outputs.

The I/O channels are managed through an XL9535 I/O expander connected over I2C, with the documented I2C address:

0x20

The digital inputs include protection intended for industrial environments.

The NPN digital outputs support up to:

0.5 A

24 V

This means the board is not just connected to an Ethernet network. It can directly receive signals from external equipment and control physical devices.

CAN Bus

The project also includes CAN communication.

The documented CAN GPIO assignments are:

TX: GPIO21

RX: GPIO47

CAN is widely used in industrial equipment, embedded systems, automotive applications, and distributed control systems.

An important implementation detail is also documented: the board does not include internal CAN termination.

When ESPCAN 8PRO is installed at the end of a CAN bus, an external 120 Ω termination resistor is required.

Providing this type of implementation detail makes the project more useful as a real engineering reference.

RS485 and Modbus

The RS485 interface uses:

TX: GPIO2

RX: GPIO1

DE/RE: GPIO42

A 120 Ω termination resistor is included for the RS485 interface.

This enables communication with Modbus-based industrial devices.

A possible data path is:

RS485 / Modbus Device
→ ESP32-S3
→ W5500 Ethernet
→ IP Network

CAN-connected devices can be integrated into the higher-level Ethernet network in a similar way.

Why the Hybrid Network Matters

Industrial sites often contain multiple generations of equipment and communication technologies.

Existing field devices may use RS485 or CAN, while modern monitoring systems and servers rely on Ethernet.

ESPCAN 8PRO demonstrates a hardware architecture capable of connecting these two environments within one controller.

Because W5500 Ethernet, CAN, and RS485 coexist in the same system, it is also a clear example of a hybrid network application.

The W5500 provides the higher-level IP connection, while the ESP32-S3 can handle the data and application logic between the different field interfaces.

Why Add W5500 to an ESP32-S3?

The ESP32-S3 already provides wireless connectivity, but wired Ethernet is still important in many industrial environments.

Examples include:

permanently installed controllers

environments where wireless stability cannot be guaranteed

systems that must connect directly to an existing LAN

applications requiring continuous network availability

gateways connecting RS485 or CAN equipment to Ethernet

In these cases, a dedicated wired Ethernet interface can complement the ESP32-S3.

In ESPCAN 8PRO, the ESP32-S3 focuses on the application and field interfaces, while the W5500 provides wired Ethernet and hardwired TCP/IP networking.

Power and Installation

ESPCAN 8PRO supports a 5–24 V DC input.

This makes it compatible with power environments commonly found in industrial installations, including 12 V and 24 V systems.

The controller is also designed for TS-35 DIN-rail mounting, making it suitable for installation inside industrial control cabinets.

Together with Ethernet, CAN, RS485, and digital I/O, the power and mechanical design make the board closer to a practical industrial controller than a conventional maker board.

Potential Applications

Remote I/O

Digital input data can be collected locally and transmitted to a supervisory system over Ethernet.

Industrial Gateway

Existing RS485- or CAN-based equipment can be connected to Ethernet-based systems.

Equipment Monitoring

Machine status signals can be acquired through digital inputs and transferred through the W5500 Ethernet interface.

Building Automation

RS485-based HVAC or building equipment can be connected to an Ethernet-based management system.

Distributed Control

Multiple controllers can handle local I/O at different locations while connecting to a central Ethernet network.

Why This Project Is Interesting

ESPCAN 8PRO is interesting because the W5500 is not used as an isolated Ethernet demonstration. It is integrated into a complete industrial control architecture.

The project provides concrete technical information including:

ESP32-S3 system architecture

W5500 SPI pin mapping

interrupt and reset signals

CAN GPIO mapping

RS485 GPIO mapping

digital I/O configuration

I2C expander address

CAN and RS485 termination requirements

power requirements

DIN-rail installation

This makes it possible to understand not only that the W5500 is used, but where it is connected, what role it performs, and how it works together with the other interfaces in the system.

Conclusion

ESPCAN 8PRO integrates the ESP32-S3, WIZnet W5500, CAN, RS485, and digital I/O into a single industrial DIN-rail controller.

The ESP32-S3 handles application logic and field-level interfaces, while the W5500 provides wired Ethernet and hardwired TCP/IP networking.

The combination of Ethernet, CAN, and RS485 also reflects the reality of industrial networks, where multiple communication technologies often coexist.

It is a useful reference showing how the W5500 can serve as the network layer not only in IoT devices, but also in industrial gateways, remote I/O systems, and building automation controllers.
