Power over Ethernet (PoE) Technology
PoE (Power over Ethernet) technology is an innovative solution that allows devices to receive both data and power through a network cable, making it ideal for devices located in positions where power supply is challenging. PoE Devices and PoE Splitters are two main types of devices that utilize this technology. In this article, we will explore the differences between PoE Devices and PoE Splitters, the advantages and disadvantages of each device, and related products used in the market.
Differences and Pros & Cons of PoE Devices and PoE Splitters
Example of a PoE Device: W5500 Equipped MQTT PoE Unit
This PoE Device is an Ethernet MQTT communication module that integrates the W5500 Ethernet chip and UART communication interface. It is equipped with an RJ45 10/100 Mb network port that supports subscription to 4 topics and simultaneously provides data and power. Such PoE devices are primarily used in edge devices like cameras or IoT gadgets that are installed in locations where power supply is challenging.
Example of a PoE Splitter: PoE Splitter Sold by M5Stack
The PoE Splitter sold by M5Stack separates PoE signals into data and power to prevent electrical interference or faults. Priced at $4.95, using a PoE Splitter can be more economical and simpler than directly supporting PoE with a 12V input.
Market Trends and Product Price Analysis
In recent years, the price of components used in PoE technology has significantly increased. This cost rise has impacted the PoE support strategy of specific products. For instance, M5Stack decided to exclude the PoE support feature from its latest LAN module considering the cost increase.
To clearly understand these market changes, let's compare the price difference between products with and without PoE functionality. For example, the LILYGO T-ETH-Lite product is priced at 2,826 yen for the standard version, while the version with PoE functionality is 4,712 yen, indicating an additional cost of about 1,886 yen for the PoE feature.
This price difference demonstrates that the addition of PoE functionality leads to a clear increase in cost. As a response, the use of PoE Splitters is presented as an alternative. PoE Splitters offer an economical solution, providing power to non-PoE supported equipment for just a few dollars. For instance, the PoE Splitter sold by M5Stack is priced at around $4.95, making it a much cheaper option than purchasing products with built-in PoE support.
In conclusion, the rise in prices of PoE technology components significantly affects product development and consumer choices. For users who require PoE functionality, comparing the cost-effectiveness of built-in PoE support versus external PoE Splitters allows for an optimal choice.
