W5500 Ethernet Module in a UPS-Enabled Power Backup Board
Hello WIZnet Community!
At the 17th Open Edge Device Study Group (Oct 16, 2024, Sony Creative Lounge),
B&B Lab. presented a practical IoT use case featuring the W5500 Ethernet module.
📌 Background
IoT devices deployed in the field often face challenges:
Power outages causing device shutdown
Unstable network connectivity in remote areas
Risk of data loss during long unattended operations
⚙️ The Solution – UPS Power Backup Board
The team developed a supercapacitor-based UPS board that:
Keeps devices alive for several minutes during power loss → safe shutdown
Accepts AC 100–240V input for easy deployment
Compact enough to fit inside waterproof cases together with Raspberry Pi devices
🌐 Why W5500?
Stable Ethernet Connectivity
Unlike LTE/WiFi, W5500 ensures reliable wired Ethernet.
Verified on Raspberry Pi OS as eth0
with successful communication.
Easy SPI Integration
Simple connection via SPI without complex drivers.
Cost-Effective and Reliable
Off-the-shelf modules used for quick prototyping and evaluation.
🎥 Test Results
Backup Time: Over 6 minutes with Pi Zero 2 and peripherals
Power Loss Test: System remained stable until safe shutdown
Network Check: W5500 module recognized and worked fine on Linux
Outdoor Use: Device placed inside waterproof/dustproof case
🚀 Future Prospects
Suitable for smart agriculture, remote monitoring, smart cities
Can be extended to high-performance devices like Jetson and CM4
Future updates include battery level monitoring via I2C
✅ This case shows how WIZnet’s W5500 module is more than just an Ethernet chip —
it is a reliable networking backbone for building robust IoT solutions.
