Some further info:
I set up the default configuration as follows:

Now when I reset it attempts to connect and reports its results, this is a typical session with multiple resets

As you can see it’s struggling to to perform DHCP in fact it’s only about one in 10 attemps that work.
Also when connection is established it is jerky, delayed and unreliable.
Do I have faulty hardware?

Hello fishbeetle…
I couldn’t find any problem about RSSI and AT-command-sets(which you used).
But, it’s a little strange that dhcpd(router) retrun <192.168.0.89>.
Of course, it is not wrong, but, there is a possibility of dhcpd’s overload or problem.
Please try it as below and let me know it.
