You are right in your observation. The information is in W5500 datasheet, but it is not explained well, just bits of data like for ping on the page 32. They (W5100 and W5500) are of the same family, and if you see something interesting in W5500 datasheet, try searching for it in W5100 datasheet. And in general, studying W5100 datasheet will add huge value for W5500 user/developer.
