I. INTRODUCTION In early 60s, industrial automation was usually composed of electromechanical parts like relays, cam timers and drum sequencers. They were interconnected in electrical circuits to perform the logical control of a machine. To change a machine logic was to make an intervention on its electrical circuit, which was a long and complicated process.
