PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Overview

Electronic monitoring systems are widely used in correctional facilities to ensure the safe management of offenders under supervision. Detection innovation developed a monitoring infrastructure that tracks signals from electronic ankle bracelets worn by offenders.

To ensure stable network connectivity and reliable data transmission, the system integrates WIZnet’s W5500 Ethernet controller with Power over Ethernet (PoE) in the signal relay device. This architecture enables continuous monitoring and centralized data management across the facility.

Challenge

The system needed to collect signals from electronic ankle bracelets worn by offenders and transmit them reliably to a central monitoring server.

However, several challenges had to be addressed:

  • Reliable network connectivity for continuous monitoring
  • Simplified installation in multiple monitoring points
  • Stable power and network communication for relay devices
  • Reduced wiring complexity in correctional facilities

Traditional designs required separate power and network cabling, increasing installation complexity and maintenance costs.

Solution

The company implemented a relay device equipped with the W5500 Ethernet controller and PoE capability.

Each relay unit detects signals transmitted from the electronic ankle bracelets and forwards the collected data to a central monitoring server via Ethernet.

Key components of the solution include:

W5500 Ethernet Controller

  • Provides reliable TCP/IP networking
  • Enables stable communication between relay devices and the monitoring server

Power over Ethernet (PoE)

  • Supplies both power and network connectivity through a single cable
  • Simplifies installation and reduces infrastructure costs

The relay devices act as intermediaries, ensuring that signals from ankle bracelets are quickly and securely transmitted to the monitoring platform.

Results

By adopting the W5500-based Ethernet solution with PoE, the system achieved several benefits:

  • Reliable real-time monitoring of offenders wearing electronic ankle bracelets
  • Simplified infrastructure with combined power and network cabling
  • Reduced installation and maintenance costs
  • Scalable architecture allowing easy deployment across multiple monitoring locations

The solution demonstrates how embedded Ethernet technology can enhance the reliability and efficiency of electronic monitoring systems used in correctional environments.
