# Support for VLAN Tagging

## Question

Asked by jimc_monaco on 2026-04-18 in Ethernet Chips.

Do any of the Wiznet hardwire Ethernet chips support VLAN Tagging?

If not, will VLAN tagging ever be supported?

Thanks

Jim

Thank you for your inquiry.

Currently, WIZnet hardwired Ethernet chips do not natively support VLAN tagging, and there are no plans to add native support for this feature in future updates.

However, there are a couple of practical alternatives to achieve VLAN communication depending on your setup:

- Using MACRAW Mode: You can bypass the chip's hardwired TCP/IP stack by using MACRAW mode. This allows you to receive and transmit raw Ethernet frames, giving you the ability to manually process VLAN tags at the software (MCU) level.

- Router-Level VLAN Management: If your device is not connected directly to a PC (1:1 connection) but is communicating through a router or managed switch, you can rely on the network equipment. Many modern routers and switches natively support VLAN management and can handle the VLAN tagging and untagging on behalf of the WIZnet chip.

Thank you.
