# ESP32 + W5500 ping assert error

## Question

Asked by melloa on 2025-12-29 in Ethernet Chips.

Good day,

Migrating a monitoring device from RPI to ESP32 with W5500 using Arduino IDE for compiling/upload getting assert errors.

Code is simple and I do beliave it is a compatibility error with the libraries used.

Any help will be appreciated. Below code:

#include <SPI.h>
#include <ESPping.h>
#include <Ethernet.h>

byte mac[] = {
0x64, 0x16, 0x8F, 0x66, 0xA4, 0xEE
};

void setup()
{
Ethernet.init(5);
Serial.begin(9600);
delay(100);
Serial.println("Initialize Ethernet with DHCP:");
if (Ethernet.begin(mac) == 0) {
Serial.println("Failed to configure Ethernet using DHCP");
if (Ethernet.hardwareStatus() == EthernetNoHardware) {
Serial.println("Ethernet shield was not found. Sorry, can't run without hardware. :(");
} else if (Ethernet.linkStatus() == LinkOFF) {
Serial.println("Ethernet cable is not connected.");
}
while (true) {
delay(1);
}
}
Serial.print("My IP address: ");
Serial.println(Ethernet.localIP());
}

void loop()
{
const IPAddress remote_ip(9,9,9,9);
Serial.print(remote_ip);
if (Ping.ping(remote_ip)){
Serial.printf(" response time : %d/%.2f/%d ms\n", Ping.minTime(), Ping.averageTime(), Ping.maxTime());
} else {
Serial.println(" Error !");
}

delay(1000);

}

My researches won't find any ESPping compatible with W5500. Any sugestions?

How do you expect people to use your devices if no support is offered? The simplest way to check ip connectivity is icmp and there is no library for your module, only for wifi and you don't offer another way or a library for that?

Hello,

We understand the confusion you are experiencing. However, network stacks and Ping-related libraries for ESP32 are provided and maintained by the ESP ecosystem (Arduino / Espressif). As such, WIZnet is not able to directly resolve issues related to the behavior or compatibility of those references or libraries.

Unlike the ESP32 WiFi stack, the W5500 is a TCP/IP Offload Engine (TOE)–based Ethernet chip. According to the Arduino Ethernet library design, it is centered around TCP and UDP socket communication, and does not provide an official API for ICMP Echo Request (Ping transmission). This behavior is intentional by design.

That said, we can share reference materials that may be helpful for understanding how Ping (ICMP) works or for considering alternative methods of checking network connectivity. Please note that the materials provided below are for reference only and are not part of official support or guaranteed implementations.

If you happen to be using the Arduino IDE, please feel free to check out this repository. Just for your reference,
This is officially supported by Arduino.
