# micropython support for W6100-EVB-Pico2

## Question

Asked by Anders_Fromell on 2025-05-06 in MCU & Boards.

Hi,

When can I expect you to uppdate/provide the needed information and modules to get support for your board(s) based on RP2350 (pico2) in micropython.

This is for example alredy done for W5100-EVB-Pico and W5500-EVB-Pico (that is based on RP2040)

It seams like the latest wiznet5k module finally supports the w6100 chip (checked at circuitpython), however the whole board branch for pico2 boards is missing at micropython..

Is there any workaround? can I use generic pico2 w branch (that includes the network part)?

I urgently need the network up and running, using python..

Best regards

Anders

Hi,

Thanks for the super fast reply !

I got myself two w6100-EVB-Pico2, to create some POC(proof of concept) implementations in automotive electrical systems.

We allways use python in our example code (many of our interacting members are not familiar with C/C++)

We are a non-profit member organisation, creating standards and specifications for IT in public transport!

Hi,

The W6100 is currently not supported in MicroPython. It is supported in CircuitPython, but only for IPv4.
Since the W5x00 series and W6x00 series use different libraries, creating a new firmware is challenging. (W5x00 uses ioLibrary, while W6x00 uses io6Library.)
These libraries have different internal structures, so porting requires more than just changing include paths it involves extensive modifications and is expected to be a time-consuming process.

If you'd prefer to use C instead of Python, I’ve included a link below.

Thank you.

Hi,

So, my current workaround is to switch to Circuitpython (10.0.x) and the board release for W5100-EVB-Pico2, where the wiznet5k module correctly detects the W6100 chip.

Since I only use IPv4 this works, however the lack of fragmentation handling and mDNS is annoying.

My point is that it might be very little work for you to build a Circuitpython board release for W6100-EVB-Pico2 with limitations to only support IPv4 thrue the wiznet5k lib.

or at least at your homepage inform and link to the board release of W5100-EVB-Pico2, so that your customers understand that it can be used with Circuitpython.

Best regards,

Anders
