# Exchanging DATA between 5500 and Browser on PC

## Question

Asked by Aurangzeb Haque on 2024-02-27 in Ethernet Chips.

Hello everyone.

I want to connect my Laptop to a microcontroller using w5500 module. The intent is to have the microcontroller read the data **SENT BY A BROWSER APP ON THE LAPTOP** without any server software running on the Laptop.
My questions are:

Can this be done without a client-server firmware running on the microcontroller?
Can I implement this by simply using a CROSS-OVER Ethernet cable?

TIA
Aurangzeb

Hello Aurangzeb,

Based on your description of wanting to send data from a browser app on a laptop to a microcontroller using a W5500 module, without running server software on the laptop, here are the answers to your questions:

1. **Can this be accomplished without client-server firmware running on the microcontroller?**
  - Fundamentally, for network communication, some form of software is needed to initiate and manage the communication. If the microcontroller is to use the W5500 module for network communication, it must at least manage the TCP/IP stack and implement a basic client-server architecture. Thus, the microcontroller needs to run firmware that acts as a server. The client (in this case, the browser on the laptop) can then connect to the server (microcontroller) to send data.

2. **Can this be implemented simply using a crossover Ethernet cable?**
  - Yes, using a crossover Ethernet cable allows you to directly connect two devices (in this case, the laptop and the microcontroller). In this setup, the browser app on the laptop can directly send HTTP requests to the microcontroller’s IP address. However, this requires the microcontroller to have firmware capable of serving these requests, and proper IP configuration (such as assigning fixed IP addresses) must be established between the laptop and the microcontroller.

In summary, for the microcontroller to read data, server-client functionality needs to be assigned, and the appropriate firmware is necessary. Direct connection using a crossover Ethernet cable is feasible but requires proper network setup and firmware implementation.
