# What does WizNet 5500 chip do on its own?

## Question

Asked by PhilipJ on 2022-12-16 in Ethernet Chips.

I have recently started using a WizNet 5500 chip in a design and quickly found that it would respond to a PING request without any interaction from my Host CPU. I can’t help wondering if there are any other things it does for itself, does anyone know if there is a document on this? The W5500 data-sheet seems a bit sparse compared to the W5100.

regards
PhilipJ

You are right in your observation. The information is in W5500 datasheet, but it is not explained well, just bits of data like for ping on the page 32. They (W5100 and W5500) are of the same family, and if you see something interesting in W5500 datasheet, try searching for it in W5100 datasheet. And in general, studying W5100 datasheet will add huge value for W5500 user/developer.
