# DIY Ethernet shield (W5100)

> I've made an Ethernet shield compatible with the official one on through-hole components.

Original author: system (source: https://forum.arduino.cc/t/diy-ethernet-shield-w5100/71198)

## Components

- **WIZnet W5100S** x 1 ([docs](https://docs.wiznet.io/Product/Chip/Ethernet/W5100S))

## Article

This project was introduced on **forum.aduino.cc by ID systems Sept 2011**.

The author made a **DIY W5100 ethernet shield **compatible with the official one on through-hole components.

Works well just like the original Ethernet shield. Schematics are similar to the official one,

The Author has** 47nf cap on RST **line to avoid the reset problem with W5100 related to ARDUINO.

The author had to reference **Wiznet's reference schematics, Ethernet shields fromArduino and Freetronics** and had to learn about PCB routing.

Once you solder the **0.4mm-spaced LQFP chip**

The author used **gEDA suite** to produce board schematics and layouts, which required little custom symbols to be made. I've attached the schematics image.

**The second revision** was under construction at this posting (he hopes to get PCB's manufactured by summer).

A better main board with **SD card**, DS1307 and **slots for radio modules** (**RFM23** and simple ASK TX/RX modules) is in the works too, pic related.

I'm doing this for yet another house automation system.

I'll post schematics and gerbers when it's done.

This post was forced to wake up by the comment which was the question of W5100.

Read this article, it is very useful for HW ethernet makers.
