## MiniPLC-32uE — A Pocket-Sized Industrial PLC That Puts a Hardware TCP/IP Stack Next to the ESP32-S3

`#W5500` `#ESP32-S3` `#PLC` `#ModbusTCP` `#ModbusRTU` `#Ethernet` `#IIoT` `#RS485` `#FRAM` `#DINRail`

> 🏭 Commercial industrial-controller product (TF Maker Shop, Thailand) — Pro license edition 📄 Hardware pinout, component list and schematic are documented in the official Hardware Manual (Rev 2.0). No public firmware source was found, so the W5500 socket mode is **not confirmed** (see Section 04).

### 01 — What is this project?

Small automation jobs — a pump station, a greenhouse, a compact production line — rarely justify a full-size PLC. Hobby boards, on the other hand, usually lack what factories actually demand: relay outputs that can switch mains loads, isolated RS-485, retentive memory that survives a power cut, and a wired network link that does not depend on Wi-Fi.

**MiniPLC-32uE** closes that gap. It is a DIN-rail PLC built around an **ESP32-S3-WROOM-1U-N16R8** (dual-core Xtensa LX7 @ 240 MHz, 16 MB flash, 8 MB PSRAM), packed with:

- 8 digital inputs (X0–X7, active-low, software debounce, default 10 ms)

- 4 OMRON relay outputs (5 A @ 250 VAC / 30 VDC) with flyback protection

- 1 analog input (MCP3221, 12-bit, 0–3.3 V)

- Galvanically isolated RS-485 (ADUM1201 + BS0505)

- **Wired Ethernet through a WIZnet W5500**, plus Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth 5.0 (LE)

- 32 KB FRAM (FM24C256) and a DS1307 RTC with battery backup

It is programmed with **Ladder Logic (Mitsubishi FX2N-compatible instruction set)** and speaks **Modbus RTU/TCP**, so engineers who already think in PLC terms can use it without learning a new toolchain.

### 02 — Why an ESP32-S3-based PLC?

#### 🔷 Dual-core headroom for real-time scan plus networking

A PLC has to run a deterministic scan cycle while also serving network traffic. Two 240 MHz cores, 8 MB PSRAM and 16 MB flash leave plenty of room to do both.

#### 🔷 A familiar PLC workflow on inexpensive silicon

The FX2N-compatible ladder instruction set and PLC-style special registers (for example `D8120` for serial format) let PLC engineers keep their habits while running on a low-cost, widely available SoC.

#### 🔷 Wireless is a bonus, not a dependency

Wi-Fi (AP/STA) and BLE 5.0 are on board for commissioning and monitoring, while the production data path can stay on wired Ethernet.

### 04 — Why WIZnet W5500? ⭐

#### 🔷 The ESP32-S3 needs an external Ethernet solution — W5500 provides a complete one

The ESP32-S3 has Wi-Fi and BLE, but no on-chip wired Ethernet MAC. Adding wired Ethernet therefore means attaching an external controller. MiniPLC-32uE uses the **W5500 over SPI**, which integrates the MAC, PHY and a **hardware TCP/IP stack** in one chip. The design pairs it with an RJ45 jack with built-in magnetics (HR911105A) and a 25 MHz crystal, so the Ethernet side stays a compact, single-chip addition to the CPU board.

#### 🔷 Hardware TCP/IP offload suits a PLC

The official manual describes the W5500 as providing a **hardware TCP/IP stack** and lists **Modbus TCP, MQTT and HTTP** among the supported protocols. For a controller whose main job is to keep a deterministic scan cycle, having protocol processing handled in the network chip rather than entirely in application firmware is a natural architectural fit.

#### 🔷 Dedicated SPI and interrupt lines

The manual dedicates a full set of GPIOs to the W5500: `SPI_CS` (IO10), `SPI_MOSI` (IO11), `SPI_CLK` (IO12), `SPI_MISO` (IO13), `SPI_INT` (IO14) and `SPI_RST` (IO21). A dedicated hardware reset and interrupt line make link handling and recovery straightforward.

#### 🔷 Socket mode — ⚠️ not confirmed

> **Note on W5500 socket mode:** The product page, the Hardware Manual and the linked documentation do **not** state which W5500 socket mode (TCP/TOE, UDP, IPRAW or MACRAW) the firmware uses, and no public firmware source is available. **This curation therefore does not claim a specific mode.** Because the manual lists Modbus TCP, MQTT and HTTP, TCP-based operation is a plausible reading — but that remains an inference, not a verified fact.

#### 🔷 Advantages over alternatives

- **vs. an SPI MAC+PHY controller such as ENC28J60:** those parts leave the TCP/IP stack to the host MCU, adding firmware and RAM/CPU load. W5500 moves that work into hardware.

- **vs. a discrete MAC + external PHY design:** the ESP32-S3 has no built-in MAC, so this route is not available without extra silicon.

- **Sockets and buffers:** W5500 offers 8 independent hardware sockets and 32 KB of internal buffer memory, which is ample for a Modbus TCP slave, an MQTT client and a web interface running side by side.

#### 🔷 What is documented ✅

- ✅ W5500 (U8) with 25 MHz crystal (Y2) and HR911105A RJ45 (J16) identified in the component list

- ✅ Full W5500 GPIO assignment in the pin-mapping table

- ✅ CPU board schematic included (Appendix B) showing the ESP32-S3 ↔ W5500 connections

- ✅ NET status LED on IO35 for network activity

- ⚠️ No firmware source, build instructions or test logs found — functional behaviour is taken from the vendor's own documentation, not independently verified

---

### Q&A

**Q1. Which W5500 socket mode does MiniPLC-32uE use?** The public documentation does not say. The manual only states that the W5500 provides a hardware TCP/IP stack and that Modbus TCP, MQTT and HTTP are supported. The specific mode (TCP/TOE, UDP, IPRAW or MACRAW) could not be confirmed, so this curation does not assert one.

**Q2. Why not use Wi-Fi only?** Industrial environments favour wired links for stability and predictable latency. The W5500 provides that wired path, while Wi-Fi remains available for commissioning.

**Q3. How is the W5500 wired to the ESP32-S3?** Over SPI with dedicated chip-select (IO10), MOSI (IO11), clock (IO12), MISO (IO13), interrupt (IO14) and reset (IO21) lines.

**Q4. Can it act as a Modbus gateway?** Yes, per the vendor: it supports Modbus RTU over isolated RS-485 and Modbus TCP over Ethernet, so a Modbus RTU → Modbus TCP gateway is one of the listed use cases.

**Q5. Is the firmware open source?** No public source repository was found while preparing this curation.

Bluetooth 5.0 (LE)

- 32 KB FRAM(FM24C256)과 배터리 백업 DS1307 RTC

프로그래밍은 **Ladder Logic(Mitsubishi FX2N 호환 명령어 셋)** 으로 하고 **Modbus RTU/TCP**를 지원합니다.
