PDNode-600 Pro — A Modular 600 W USB-C PD Rack Unit That Gets Its Network From a W5500 M.2 Module

`#W5500` `#RP2354B` `#USB-PD` `#PDU` `#Ethernet` `#SNMP` `#10inchRack` `#Homelab` `#ModularHardware` `#KiCad`

> 🛠️ Open hardware project in active development (hardware bring-up ongoing, firmware planned) 📄 Schematics, PCB documents and KiCad sources are published; no firmware or validation results are published yet, so the W5500 socket mode is **not confirmed** (see Section 04).

---

### 01 — What is this project?

Homelabs, embedded test benches and compact 10-inch racks all need the same thing: many devices to power, and a way to control that power remotely. Mains-switching PDUs solve part of this, but a growing share of gear is now powered over USB-C. Chargers and power strips for USB-C are usually unmanaged — no per-port control, no telemetry, no remote access.

**PDNode-600 Pro** is a 10-inch rackmount USB Power Delivery unit designed to fill that gap. It is the DC/USB-C sibling of the author's ENERGIS 230 V managed PDU, for setups where mains switching is not wanted but controllable, rack-friendly power output still is.

- **8 × independent USB-C PD source ports** (5 / 9 / 12 / 15 / 20 V at 3 A, 5 A with 5 A e-marked cables)

- **4 × USB-A 5 V outputs** (up to 1 A each)

- **600 W total budget** from a centralized 24 V / 25 A industrial supply

- **Ethernet connectivity, a web-based UI, SNMP integration and firmware updates over USB-C** on the Pro variant

- **Per-port power monitoring and status reporting**, with a **modular, hot-swappable slot concept**: one PD card per port

The networking and control brain is a separate module, **BladeCore-M54E** — an RP2354B controller with a WIZnet W5500 on a compact M.2 2980 card.

---

### 02 — Why a modular PD architecture?

#### 🔷 A baseboard plus swappable PD cards

The Rev 1.0.0 redesign moved to a modular concept: a baseboard distributes 24 V to every slot, and each slot takes a PD card that converts it locally. Each card carries one USB-C port, an MPQ4242-AEC1 PD controller, per-port current/voltage measurement and power-good/fault outputs.

#### 🔷 Designed around a real component change

The changelog states that the first design used the STUSB4710, which became end-of-life, forcing a full redesign around a different PD controller. The result is a cleaner, card-based architecture rather than a one-off board.

#### 🔷 One management module, reusable across designs

BladeCore-M54E is one member of a broader **BladeCore** module series (RP2040 and RP2354B variants with Ethernet or CAN). Putting the MCU and Ethernet on a standard-form-factor card keeps the carrier board focused on power.

### 04 — Why WIZnet W5500? ⭐

#### 🔷 A remote-managed rack needs a wired network, and the RP2354B has no Ethernet MAC

PDNode-600 Pro targets "remote-managed racks and headless environments", where a web UI and SNMP are the whole point. The RP2354B does not include an Ethernet MAC, so an external Ethernet controller is required. BladeCore-M54E uses the **W5500 over SPI**, which combines MAC, PHY and a hardware TCP/IP stack in one chip.

#### 🔷 Integrated PHY makes a 29 mm module possible

BladeCore-M54E is a **M.2 2980 M-Key card** (29 mm × 80 mm) that also holds the MCU, 16 MB QSPI flash, an I²C EEPROM, a USB multiplexer and power regulation. A W5500 with integrated PHY keeps the Ethernet function to a single IC on that card. The 100BASE-TX differential pairs (TD±/RD±), the magnetics center taps (TCT/RCT) and link/activity LED signals are brought out on the M.2 edge connector for the carrier board.

#### 🔷 Dedicated reset and interrupt, on its own SPI bus

The module documentation lists **SPI1** as the bus used for the onboard W5500 and describes **dedicated reset and interrupt signals** plus **link and activity LEDs**. Keeping the network chip on its own SPI bus and giving it its own reset and interrupt lines suits a controller that must also talk to per-slot I²C devices and the PD controllers.

#### 🔷 Offloading networking from a management MCU

The planned Pro features — a web UI (HTTP) and SNMP — are network-service workloads. W5500 provides hardware TCP/IP and supports TCP and UDP socket operation, which leaves the RP2354B free for slot scanning, I²C multiplexing, PD-controller interfacing and telemetry. *(This describes the chip's capability; the project's own firmware approach is not yet published.)*

#### 🔷 Socket mode — ⚠️ not confirmed

> **Note on W5500 socket mode:** The repositories do not state which W5500 socket mode (TCP/TOE, UDP, IPRAW or MACRAW) will be used, and no firmware has been published — the project's firmware phases are still marked as planned. The BladeCore-M54E documentation itself states that it *"intentionally avoids assumptions about firmware features, supported protocols, or software behavior."* **This curation therefore does not claim a specific mode.**

#### 🔷 Advantages over alternatives

- **vs. an MCU with an on-chip MAC plus external PHY:** the RP2354B has no MAC, so this route needs extra silicon and firmware stack effort.

- **vs. SPI MAC+PHY parts such as ENC28J60:** those leave the TCP/IP stack to the host MCU. W5500 moves it into hardware.

- **vs. a fully software stack (e.g. lwIP):** it would run on the same MCU that handles telemetry and PD management.

#### 🔷 What is documented ✅

- ✅ Full schematics for the Baseboard, PDCard-4242 and BladeCore-M54E published as PDFs

- ✅ PCB documentation and KiCad design folder for BladeCore-M54E (Rev 1.0.0, 2026-01-31)

- ✅ W5500 wiring on SPI1, with reset, interrupt, and link/activity LED signals

- ✅ PCBs ordered; hardware prototyping and bring-up ongoing

- ⚠️ Firmware bring-up, telemetry, and validation (load, thermal, long-run) are still marked **planned**

- ⚠️ The Web UI shown in the README is an interactive dummy UI ("playground"), not a running device

### Conclusion

> **PDNode-600 Pro shows how a W5500-equipped M.2 module can give a modular 600 W USB-C PD rack unit its network brain.**

- ✅ 8 × USB-C PD + 4 × USB-A within a 600 W budget

- ✅ Modular baseboard + PD card architecture with per-port monitoring

- ✅ WIZnet W5500 Ethernet on a compact M.2 2980 controller module

- ✅ Published schematics, PCB documents and KiCad sources

- ✅ Web UI and SNMP planned for remote management

- ⚠️ Early stage: firmware and validation still planned, W5500 socket mode not confirmed

---

### Q&A

**Q1. Which W5500 socket mode is used?** Not stated. No firmware is published and the BladeCore-M54E documentation deliberately avoids assumptions about firmware and protocols, so this curation does not assert a mode.

**Q2. Is the project finished?** No. Architecture, baseboard and PD card PCB design are completed and PCBs are ordered; hardware bring-up is ongoing, while firmware, telemetry and validation are planned.

**Q3. Why put Ethernet on a separate module?** BladeCore-M54E packages the MCU, memory, USB path selection and W5500 Ethernet on a standard M.2 2980 card, which keeps the carrier board focused on power and allows the same module to be reused.

**Q4. Can I build and sell it?** The hardware is licensed under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 and the software under AGPL-3.0; the author states commercial use requires a separate commercial license.

**Q5. Is the web UI real?** The linked UI is an interactive dummy "playground". The real firmware UI is part of the planned work.

- **독립 USB-C PD 소스 포트 8개** (5 / 9 / 12 / 15 / 20 V, 3 A. 5 A e-marked 케이블 사용 시 5 A)

- **USB-A 5 V 출력 4개** (포트당 최대 1 A)

### Q&A
