Overview

CS Tech is a renewable energy company specializing in solar power facilities and energy storage systems. In this project, the company used WIZnet’s W5500 in a solar panel sensing application and implemented Serial-to-Ethernet communication with an STM32 MCU to transmit sensing data over Ethernet for monitoring and management.

The system was designed to collect sensing data from solar panels through a Serial interface, process it with an STM32 microcontroller, and deliver it to an Ethernet-based network using the W5500. This made it possible to connect field sensing data from photovoltaic infrastructure to a monitoring environment in a stable and efficient way.


Background

In solar power systems, sensing and monitoring are essential for maintaining generation efficiency, detecting abnormal conditions, and improving maintenance operations. However, many sensing devices in the field still communicate through Serial interfaces, which can make direct integration with modern Ethernet-based monitoring systems more difficult.

For this kind of environment, the communication system needs to provide:

As a company focused on renewable energy, solar power facilities, and energy storage systems, CS Tech needed a practical embedded communication solution that could bridge field sensing devices and Ethernet infrastructure.


Solution

In this application, WIZnet’s W5500 was used as the Ethernet connectivity core, while an STM32 MCU handled sensing data processing and Serial communication. Together, they formed a compact Serial-to-Ethernet system for solar panel monitoring.

The system works as follows:

  • Solar panel sensing data is collected through a Serial interface
  • The STM32 MCU receives and processes the sensing values
  • The W5500 provides Ethernet connectivity for network transmission
  • The converted data is sent to an external monitoring or management system over Ethernet

By using the W5500, the system can implement Ethernet communication efficiently while reducing the complexity of TCP/IP networking on the MCU side. This makes it especially suitable for embedded sensing systems deployed in renewable energy infrastructure.


System Architecture
